(Arcanobacterium) Trueperella and Actinobaculum Flashcards
Describe the bacterium: Trueperella
Gram positive, catalase negative, pleomorphic, facultative anaerobe, non-spore forming, non-motile, non-capsulated, capnophilic
Arcanobacterium- Acid fast? Hemolysis?
No mycolic acids so acid fast NEGATIVE. BETA hemolytic
Arcanobacterium - description
Gram positive, anaerobic. Variable hemolysis
When I say summer mastitis, you say….
Trueperella pyogenes!
Cows - Pyogranulomatous mastitis
Trueperella pyogenes
Summer Mastitis pathogenesis & virulence factors
Physical/microbial barrier broken–> adhesion–> Neuramidases expose receptors, aids binding–> Proteases, DNAases help spread. - Pyolysin O=pore-forming, damages host cell
Most important virulence factors of arcanobacterium
Pyolysin O (PLO) - Neuraminidase - DNAase - Proteases
When I say liver abscesses in cattle, you say…
A. pyogenes (though could also be Fusobacterium necrophorum)
A. pyogenes in bovine
Liver abscesses, mastitis, endometritis, abortion, endocarditis
A. pyogenes in caprine (less important)
Mastitis
A. pyogenes in porcine (less important)
Pneumonia, septic arthritis, endocarditis
A. pyogenes in poultry (less important)
Osteomyelitis, nephritis
A. pyogenes in ovine (less important)
Pneumonia, abortion, endometritis
Boars- commensal diphtheroid prepucial mucosa, sexually transmitted to sows, cystitis & pyelonephritis, Dysuria, hematuria, death from renal failure. Urease = main virulence factor
Actinobaculum suis. (Similar to C. renale in bovine)
When I say STD of swine with cystitis/ pyelonephritis, you say…
Actinobaculum suis
