- air conditioning
- main engine starting
- Hydraulic and pneumatic pumps
- electrical alternators

A
In fireproof enclosure in the tail cone or rear fuselage

Control of the APU
A
After manual selection of the master switch START/STOP, operation of most modern APUs are automatic
All operations are controlled by the APU integrated control system
This can also act to shut down the APU in case of a malfunction
