Approaches; Wundt Flashcards
Wundt’s Strengths
- use of testable hypotheses boosting research replicability and understanding behaviour.
- introspection persists today
Wundt’s Weaknesses
- participants can report conscious experiences but not unconscious factors, limiting introspection’s explanatory power.
- it can also be difficult to establish general principles and replicate results reliably.
Process of introspection
1)participants are trained to report conscious experiences as objectively as possible
2) participants are asked to focus on a sensory object (e.g. a ticking metronome)
3) Participants would systematically report their experience of the object by breaking
their thoughts into separate elements; focus inward and report sensations, feelings
and images.
When and where did Wundt establish the first psychology laboratory?
In 1879, Wilhelm Wundt established the first-ever laboratory dedicated entirely to psychological inquiry in Leipzig, Germany.
Structuralism
An attempt to uncover the hidden structures of the mind
How did Wundt research?
Wundt used standardised procedures
What was Wundt’s method?
He and his co-workers recorded their experiences when presented with various stimuli.
What was Wundt’s aim?
His aim was to isolate the structure of consciousness
