Approaches- Social Learning Theory Flashcards
social learning theory (BANDURA)
learning that occurs through observing others (models) in our environment
assumptions of social learning theory
- cognitive processes are taken into account, the mind, behaviour and environment all play roles in learning
- we learn through modelling
modelling
learning through observations which leads to imitations of the model’s behaviour
conditions for modelling (meditational processes)
- attention
- retention
- motor reproduction
- motivation
attention
individual notices someone in their environment
retention
individual remembers what they’ve observed
motor reproduction
individual replicates behaviour shown by model
motivation
individual seeks to demonstrate behaviour observed
when is imitation more likely to occur?
if the model has vicarious reinforcement and if we identify with the model/ have similar characteristics as us
vicarious reinforcement
indirectly learning through observing others experiences
Advantages of slt
- acknowledges the role of human cognition as it recognises the role of meditational processes
- can be used to explain the influence of media on aggressive behaviours
- explains differenced of behaviour between different culture as if the behaviour isn’t demonstrated, it cant be imitated
disadvantages of SLT
- doesnt take free will and moral values into account
- Ignores biological/ psychological factors
- has environmental determinism
- demand characteristics in Banduras experiment
