Approaches (SLT) Flashcards
What does it state behaviour is a result of?
“All behaviour is learned from the environment through observing others and imitating behaviours that are rewarded”
Is it nature or nurture?
Nurture
Is it for or against scientific method?
For/supports it
Define Model
Provides examples of behaviour that can be observed and imitated
Define imitation
Behaviour that can be observed by individuals and later reproduced
Define identification
How much individual relates to their model/ feels that they are similar to that person E.g age, gender.
Define Vicarious reinforcement
Individuals learn about the consequences of an action, and adjust their behaviour accordingly
What is the role of meditational processes?
Mental representations of behaviour displayed by model and probable consequences in terms of expectancies in the future outcome
What was the procedure of the bobo doll study by bandura?
- 2 groups of Children observed aggressive or non-aggressive model with dolls
- Aggressive - verbally and physically
- children allowed to interact with doll afterwards
Findings from Banduras study?
- Children who say aggressive model imitated the aggression
- Children who witnessed non-aggressive model showed little to no aggression.
+What is a supportive point for this approach?
- Can be used as a useful application to understand criminal behaviour
- Increase in criminal behaviour if witnessed model do it as well, especially when behaviour/ consequences were positive/ rewarding
- What is a limitation of this approach?
- There is problems with the causality
- Cause of deviant behaviour/delinquency may not be a result of exposure to deviant role models, but the possession of deviant attitudes prior to contact with deviant peers so we seek out others with similar attitudes as it’s easier to get along with them and is seen as fun
