- They are there to prevent traumatic memories from the unconscious from reaching conscious awareness
- They also operate unconsciously, distorting reality to reduce anxiety
Define the defence mechanism repression
Unconscious blocking of unacceptable thoughts
Define the defence mechanism of denial
The refusal to accept reality
Define the defence mechanism of displacement
Redirecting of thoughts and feelings from original target onto an innocent object or individual
