what is peer assessment?
where another employee assesses the performance of a college and highlights where they’ve done well and where they can do better.
what is self assessment ?
where the employee assesses their own performance, highlighting areas they did well and what they need to improve on
what is 360-degree feedback?
a method of appraisal that gathers feedback from a number of people in the organisation such as peers, managers and customers in order to gain a fairer and more detailed view of the employees performance against set objectives
benefits of peer assessment
- can encourage empowerment
- can encourage am team based approach to improving performance
disadvantage of peer assesment
- the person undertaking the assessment may not have the skills to carry out the task effectively - difficulties - demotivation
benefit of self assessment
- can create a sense of empowerment - motivation
disadvantage of self assesment
- some people find it hard to be self-critical or balanced - frustration - demotivation
benefits of 360-degree feedback
- all parties will feel it is a fair and balanced review - greater trust- motivation (to act on feedback )
drawbacks of 360-degree feedback
- the process is time consuming
- businesses may pay ‘lip service’ to the idea rather than engaging with it thoroughly - employees loose trust in the process and outcomes
general advantages of appraisal (5)
- improved performance
- identifies training needs - cost effective
- identifies those capable of promotion - internal recruitment = cost savings
- identifies underperformance
- recognises good performance - motivation (those underperforming can be encouraged to improve by the time of the next appraisal)
