Application Of Theories Of Behavioir Change Flashcards
Prochaskas six stage model of behaviour change
Model has cyclical nature
Takes positive and dynamic approach
To change behaviour as opposed to an all or nothing approach
Model recognises people differ in how ready they are to give up an addiction
And how useful the treatment intervention will be depends on which stage induvidual is at
Pre - contemplation
Induvidual does not consider themselves as having a problem
Ao2 focusing on helping the addict to consider the need to change
Contemplation
Induvidual is now thinking about changing behaviour
Ao2 drug treatments/ help individual understand pros of overcoming addiction outweighs the costs
Preparation
They decide to change within next month but not exactly what they’ll do to change
Ao2 constructing a plan
Action
Plan is put into action done something to change behaviour continuing behaviour change
Ao2 : developing coping strategies
Maintenance
Induvidual has maintained some change of behaviour for more than 6 months
Ao2 applying coping strategies
Termination
Newly acquired behaviours such as abstinence become automatic , no longer addicted
confident in ability to resist behaviour
Ao2 no intervention required
What is according to this model ?
Relapse is not considered as a failure
Can occur at anytime
Where induvidual will return to earlier stages e.g contemplation and preparation
Ao3 strength of six strange model
Veiws recovery from addiction as dynamic process
Emphasises of having time to overcome addiction e.g smoking in a continuous process
This is why model has six stages that vary from person to person and not all addicts go through same stages in the same order
Suggests six stage model provides realistic veiw of complex recovery from addiction
Ao3 prochaskas six stage model positive veiw of relapse
Does not veiw relapse as failure but inevitable part of dynamic un-linear process of behaviour change
Alothough relapses more than a ‘slip’ model takes ur seriously and does not underestimate its potential to knock an addict off course of recovery
Means six stage model of behaviour change is more acceptable as resault of its positive outlook on relapse
Ao3 prochaskas six stage model limitation
Criticised some argue stages of change are not well differentiated
Pa Kraft et al argued six stage could be reduced to two useful stages pre contemplation plus others grouped together
As person I’m thinking about change in all later stages
This has important implications as each stage is matched with specific intervention
Thus this could limit prochaskas usefulness as model of behaviour change and for treatment recommendations
