What is addiction ?
Is a disorder in which an induvidual consumes as substance or engages in a particular behaviour
That is pleasurable but eventually become compulsive with harmful consequence’s
Key features are dependence physical and psychological , tolerance and withdrawal syndrome
Psychological dependence
Mental and emotional compulsion to keep taking a substance
As induvidual believes they cannot cope with work or social life without particular drug e.g nicotine or behaviour e.g gambling
May increase pleasure or lesson their discomfort
Absence of drug/behaviour causes individual to feel anxious or irritable this leads to craving for the substance
Psychical dependence
State of body occurs when withdrawal syndrome is produced from stopping substance use/ behaviour
E.g nausea, headaches and shaking
Withdrawal syndrome
Collection of psychological and psychical symptoms induvidual will experience when no longer have a substance in system/ engage in particular behaviour
Withdrawal syndrome includes , low mood , feeling nauseous, achy in pain or experiencing tremors
Very unpleasant , continuing to take substance / engage in behaviour is partly to avoid withdrawal symptoms
Seriousness of withdrawal syndrome can depend on variety of factors
Substance uses /type of behaviour
Amount of substance consumed
Drug use / behaviour patterns
Tolerance
When you have taken a substance/maintained behaviour for some time and due to repeat exposure , response to susbance/ behaviour is reduced
When tolerance occurs , individual will need greater does to feel same physical and psychological effects
Risk factor
Anything internal or external that increases likelihood of an individual starting use drug or engage in addictive behaviour
