Apparatus Maintenance Flashcards
What fluids/supplies must be maintained by the company officer for the apparatus?
Hydraulic Fluid, Transmission fluid, Antifreeze, Motor oil and Tire Chains.
The Equipment Maintenance Division must be called when which fluids are low?
Hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid and antifreeze.
How many gallons of motor oil is required to maintain proper engine oil level?
5 gallons.
What must be inspected with the tire chains?
Tire chain condition, cross links and spare cross links.
When must the apparatus be washed and waxed?
The apparatus must be washed before the end of each tour and waxed quarterly.
Who is responsible for completing the Driver Checklist and when?
The company officer will ensure that the driver completes the checklist at the beginning of each tour.
What checks are to be made on all apparatus at the beginning of each tour?
Battery, Brakes, Tower Ladders, Motor, Fuel, Pumpers, Transmission, Wheel and tires, SCBAs and General.
What checks are to be made to the battery?
Check the water level and add water if necessary, do not overfill.
Check terminals, grounding clamps and carrier for corrosion and tightness
Check for cleanliness, if dirty clean to prevent current loss.
Check specific gravity readings on vehicles batteries except on maintenance free batteries
All other battery servicing will be referred to the EMD (shop) by Company Officer
What checks are to be made to the brakes?
The air pressure for air brakes is at a normal reading.
Take a reading on the gauge and monitor for abnormal air loss.
Apply brakes with the engine off to listen for air leaks and watch gauge for excessive air loss.
What is a normal air pressure reading on the air brake system?
Between 118-122 PSI. If it’s not between those readings, call EMD (shop).
What is an abnormal pressure drop in the air brake system and what does it indicate?
If the pressure drops more than 15 pounds in one hour, this indicates an air leak. Call EMD (shop).
What must be inspected on SCBA bottles by the Driver? What is the proper PSI for SCBA bottles?
Check all SCBA bottles for damage and proper pressure of 4500 PSI.
What must be communicated between the Driver and Firefighter about the scott bottles?
The firefighter must inspect the SCBA bottle for their riding position then report its status to the driver. (working/not working)
Who needs to be notified if there are problems with the SCBA bottles?
The company officer is to be notified. Then they must notify the EMD (shop).
What must be inspected with the Tower Ladders?
Check hydraulic oil levels (notify EMD if oil needs to be added)
Check operation of the tower ladder at the beginning of shift
Check for hydraulic leaks (notify shop if found)
Check for any visual damage to tower and all ground ladders (notify EMD if damage is found)
What must be inspected with the motor and fuel?
Check motor oil level
Fill apparatus with fuel as required
Check for leaks of oil, fuel, water, grease or antifreeze.
Check all belts and fans
Check radiator coolant level (if low call EMD)
Check front of radiator for any obstructions
How often must the motor oil level be checked?
Must be checked daily.
What is the minimum fuel level for apparatus before needing to fuel?
Minimum fuel level is ¾ full.
What must be inspected with the apparatus pumpers?
Check the operation of all drain valves daily
Check and operate the discharge valves transfer valve, tank fill valve, tank to pump control, relief valve, pressure governor, road to pump lights and controls and all gauges.
Check pump priming oil tank level. Add 15/40 engine oil when needed.
Check threads on all intake and discharge gates for damage
Check water level in water tank
Check foam level in foam tank
Check that all pump panel engine gauges match the cab dash gauges.
Refer other pump servicing to the EMD (shop).
When checking the transmission fluid, what can happen if overfilling occurs?
Overfilling causes foaming, resulting in slippage and the fluids
