Political Party
Organized coalition of interests that seeks to influence government and policy by getting members elected to public office and by coordinating the actions of elected officials.
Thomas Jefferson
3rd President of the United States. He favored limited central government. He was chief drafter of the Declaration of Independence; approved of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and promoted ideals of republicanism. Sent out the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore this territory.
Political Machine
Party organization that offered rewards for voting for them in the shape of government jobs and funds.
candidate-centered politics
politics that focuses on candidates, their particular issues, and character rather than party affiliation.
Party Realignment
dramatic shifts in partisan preferences that drastically alter the political landscape.
Critical election
an election that signals party realignment through voter polarization around new issues and personalities.
Secular realignment
a gradual rearrangement of party coalition based more on demographic shifts than on shocks to the political system.
National convention
a party meeting held in the presidential election year for the purpose of nominating a presidential and vice presidential ticket and adopting a platform.
Delegate
someone who speaks or acts on behalf of an organization at a meeting or conference between organizations of the same level.
Superdelegate
party leaders and elected officials who become delegates to the national convention without having to run in primaries or caucuses not required to pledge themselves in advance to a presidential candidate.
Donald J. Trump
The forty-fifth president, a republican, elected in 2016. First president elected without political experience.
National party platform
political party’s statement of its goals and policies for the next four years. The platform is drafted prior to the party convention by a committee whose members are chosen in rough proportion to each candidate’s strength. It is the best formal statement of a party’s beliefs.
Barack Obama
The first African American President of the United States, a Democrat, who served as the forty-fourth president from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.
Party Identification
a citizen’s self-proclaimed preference for one party or the other.
Hillary Clinton
First female major party candidate for president of the United States, a Democrat who ran against president Donald J. Trump. Secretary of the state from 2009 to 2013; New York senator from 2001 to 2009; former first lady.
