The Tragedy of the commons
When people talk about the managing common property resources such as air, water, and land.
Conservation
The management or regulation of a resource so that its use does not exceed the capacity of the resource it regenerates itself.
Preservation
Maintenance of a species or ecosystem in order to ensure their perpetuation, with no concern as to their potential monetary value
Ecosystem capital
When we describe something as a resource we are essentially putting an economic value on it
Traditional subsistence agriculture
Each family grew crops for themselves, and families primarily relied on animal and human labor to plant and harvest crops
Green Revolution
Time after the industrial revolution when farming became mechanized and crop yield in industrialized nations boomed
Salinization
Buildup of salts on the soils surface, which makes the land unusable for crops
Genetically modified organisms
Adding genes from one species to another to encourage desirable characteristics, such as longer shelf life, disease/drought/pest resistance, faster growth, and higher crop yields
Integrated pest management
Tries to keep the pest population down to an economically viable level
Federal insecticide, fungicide, and rodenticide act (FIFRA)
Law requires EPA to approve use of all pesticides in the United States
Photosynthate
Photosynthetic products
Contour plowing
Rows of crops are plowed across the hillside prevents the erosion that can occur when rows are cut up and down on a slope
Terracing
Also aids in preventing soil erosion on Streep slopes.
No-till methods
Farmers plant seeds without using a plow to turn the soil,
Agroforestry
Trees and crops are planted together
