AP04 - cranial nerves Flashcards
What kind of fibres does nerve I have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
SVA - for smell
Fibres are not connected to the brainstem and are carried in the olfactory tract, emerging through the cribriform plate
What kind of fibres does nerve II have, what is their function, and what is their ppathway?
SVA - sight
Not attached to the brainstem, emerge through the optic canal
What kind of fibres does nerve III have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GSE - controls 4/6 extraocular muscles
GVE - pupil dilation/constriction
Passes through the superior orbital fissure
What kind of fibres does nerve IV have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GSE - superior oblique muscle
Escapes though the superior orbital fissure
What kind of fibres does nerve V have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GSA for anterior 2/3 of the tongue Has Opthalmic (superior orbital fissure), Maxillary(foramen rotundum), and mandibular(foramen ovale) branches
What kind of fibres does nerve VI have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GSE - lateral rectus muscle
escapes through the superior orbital fissure
What kind of fibres does nerve VII have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
HAS LOADS
controls muscles of facial expression
chorda tympani branch innervates rear 1/3 of tongue
(contains SSE for taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue)
branch runs close to the parotid salivary gland, running through the internal acoustic meatus.
What kind of fibres does nerve VIII have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
SSA for hearing and balance
It escapes through the internal acoustic meatus
What kind of fibres does nerve IX have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GVE for gag reflex and innervation of the parotid salivary gland
GSA - taste for posterior 1/3 of the tongue
Escapes through the jugular foramen
What kind of fibres does nerve X have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
It does fucking everything
it escapes through the jugular foramen and travels through the neck in the carotid sheath (the reccurent laryngeal nerve loops back)
What kind of fibres does nerve XI have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GSE - sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
It escapes through the jugular foramen
What kind of fibres does nerve XII have, what is their function, and what is their pathway?
GSE - extrinsic tongue muscles
escapes through the hypoglossal canal
What are collections of axons called in CNS and PNS?
CNS -Tracts
PNS - Nerves
What are cell bodies of neurones called in CNS and PNS?
CNS - Nuclei
PNS - Ganglion
