AP01 - nervous tissue Flashcards
What types of ganglia are found in the PNS?
Schwann cells
Satellite cells
What kind of ganglia are found in the CNS?
Astrocytes
microglial cells
ependymal cells
Oligodendrocytes
What do satellite cells do?
offer elctrical insulation and regulate nutrient and waste exchange
What do astrocytes do?
help form the blood brain barrier and occupy the space of dying neurones
What types of astrocytes are there?
fibrous in white matter
protoplasmic in grey matter
What kind of cells are microglial cells?
phagocytic cells
is white nervous tissue myelinated?
YES
What do Nissl bodies indicate?
the cell is undergoing a high rate of protein synthesis
How does the myelin sheath develop?
The axon is invaginated into the schwann cell
mesaxon
What happens to patients with multiple sclerosis?
they may develop sclerotic plaque, where lymphocytes and macrophage destroy myelin sheaths.
What is a glioma?
tumour of the glial cell
Where are the bodies of motoneurones found?
grey matter in ventral horn
How do motoneurones look in a transverse view?
more pentagonal than sensory neurones
What do schwann cells do other than help with the AP?
form Bands of Bunger
aid in neurone regeneration after phagocytosis
