Aortic Stenosis Flashcards
What is congenital aortic valve stenosis
Babies born with a narrow aortic valve which restricts blood flow from the left ventricle to right aorta. Patients can have valves with 1, 2, 3, or 4 leaflets
Symptoms of congenital aortic valve stenosis
Asymptomatic, fatigue, SOB, dizziness, fainting, worse on exertion. HF within few months of life
Signs of aortic valve stenosis
Ejection systolic murmur, palpable thrill, slow rising pulse and narrow pulse pressure
Type of murmur in aortic stenosis
Ejection systolic murmur heard loudest over the aortic area. Crescendo-decrescendo character that radiates to the carotids. There is an ejection click before the murmur
Management of aortic valve stenosis
ECHO, regular check ups, reestrict activities if significant. Percutaneous balloon aortic valvoplasty, surgical aortic valvotomy and valve replacement
Complications of aortic stenosis
LV outflow tract obstruction
HF
Ventricular arrhytmias
bacterial endocarditis
sudden death on exertion
