Q

Vena cava caudalis

In general

A

● Begins at level of last lumbar vertebra by convergence of the median sacral vein
and common iliac veins

● Caudal vena cava passes cranilly along the roof of the abdomen to the right of the
aorta

● Joined by RENAL veins and SEGMENTAL veins of LUMBAR SPINE before it continues
BETWEEN the LOBES of the LIVER

● IN its joined by HEPATIC VEINS and veins from the DIAPHRAGM

● Enters the thorax by passing through the diaphragm through FORAMEN VENACAVAE,
pursues course through special pleural fold: PLICA VENAE CAVAE, accompanied by
PHRENIC NERVE

20
Q

Vena portae

In general

A

● Collects blood from ALL UNPARIED ORGANS in the abdominal cavity and transports it to
the LIVER = the PORTAL SYSTEM

● 3 ROOT VESSELS of the PORTAL VEIN:

  1. Cranial mesenteric veins,
  2. Caudal mesenteric veins,
  3. Splenic veins

● In the liver, the portal vein DEVIDES to form LIVER SINUSOIDS, blood filled cavities
enclosed by sheets of hepatic cells

● Sinusoid blood is COLLECTED in the CENTRAL VEIN , which is the beginning of the EFFERENT venous system of the liver

● Central veins form interlobular veins , form the HEPATIC VEINS , which EMPTY in the
CAUDAL VENA CAVAE!!

21
