Anxiety Disorders are defined by two main symptoms
fear and anxiety
fear vs anxiety
fear: emotional response to real or percieved threat
anxiety: anticipation of future threat, real or imaginary
panic attacks 10-4
peak 10 minutes
involves 4 or more symptoms:
pounding heart, sweating, chest pain, nausea, feeling dizzy, lightheaded, fear of dying, numbing, tingling, depersonalization, fear of losing control
limited symptom panic attacks
less than 4 symptoms
separation anxiety disorder 643
developmentally inappropriate and excessive fear of being away from caretaker
3 symptoms essential
- distress when seperation occurs or anticipated
- worry about harm toward caretaker
- repeated nightmares about seperation
- fear of being alone with the figure
usually occurs after a life stress
most common anxiety in children under 12
must be 4 weeks duration for kids, 6m for adults
selective mutism 15
1 month duration, usual onset before age 5
specific phobia 6
exposure to specific stimulus causes out of proportion distress, anxiety avoidance or panic attack
6 month or more duration
social anxiety disorder
social phobia, 1 or more exposure to either social interactions, performing in front of others,
person fears his or her behavior will lead to embarassment, rejection, humiliation
panic disorder 1M
UNEXPECTED
recurring
involves
1) concern of having more panic attacks
or
2) changes in behavior related to the attacks

agoraphobia 62
6 month duration
person must fear 2 situations:
being in open spaces, being in enclosed spaces, public transportation, large crowds, being in lines being outside of home,
generalized anxiety disorder 63
6 months,
excessive worry and anxiety about numerous things, for more days than not
must have 3 symptoms
restlessness, fatigue, sleep issues, concentration issues, muscle tension, irritability
