for at least 6 months about a number of events or activities
Affects women twice and much as men
Age of diagnosis usually about 20 years old

DSM-IV Criteria: Generalized anxiety disorder
3 of 6 symptoms present for more days than not:
C – concentration poor
R – restlessness
I – irritability
M – muscle tension
E – easy fatiguability
S – sleep disturbances
First line therapy for generalized anxiety disorders?
SSRIs
What anxiety disorder is described below?
Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks that occur abruptly and are accompanied by debilitating fear of having additional attacks
May have feelings of impending harm or death, fear of heart attack, fears of “going crazy”
2-3x more common in females
Average age of onset in mid 20s

S – setting situations: Fear of situations that include bridges, tall buildings, flying, driving, confined spaces
N – natural environment: Fear of natural phenomena: storms, heights, water, lightning
A – animal: Fear of animals or insects
P – possibility of blood-injection injury: Fear of invasive procedures, injury, sight of blood, contamination by bodily fluids
What is the best treatment for phobias?
Psychotherapy and desensitization/exposure therapy

involves exposure to a traumatic stressor
Stressor can be experienced, witnessed or learned about
Person’s response to event must involve intense fear, helplessness, terror
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
For a diagnosis of PTSD, 3 or more of the following must be present for more than one month:
Inability to recall an important aspect of the event
Avoidance of activities, places, or people reminding person of the traumatic event
Attempts of avoiding talking or recalling event
Feelings of detachment or estrangement from others
Markedly decreased interest (anhedonia)
Restricted range of affect
Belief that future has been foreshadowed because of event
Re-experiencing event
Increased state of arousal characterized by at least two of the following: Insomnia, Irritability or anger outbursts, Poor concentration, Hypervigilance, Exaggerated startle response
What medications are considered first line in PTSD?
SSRIs are considered first line
Zoloft and Paxil
How long is the duration of acute stress disorder? (range)
Duration of 2 days to 4 weeks
For diagnosis of acute stress disorder, need three or more of the following for duration of 2 days to 4 weeks along with re-experience, anxiety/excessive arousal, avoidance
Detachment
Daze
Dissociative amnesia
Derealization
Depersonalization
