What is the primary reason for the admin of antipsychotic meds?
Schizophrenia spectrum disorders
Positive Symptoms
Agitation, bizarre behavior, delusions, hallucinations, flight of ideas, loose associations
Negative Symptoms
Social w/drawal, lack of emotion, lack of energy, flattened affect, decreased motivation, decreased pleasure in activities
Goals of Treatment
1) Suppression of acute episodes
2) Prevention of acute recurrence
3) Maintenance of the highest possible level of functioning
1st Gen Antipsychotics
Used mainly to control the positive symptoms
Reserved for clients who:
- Used successfully & can tolerate adverse effects
- Concerned about cost associated w/ 2nd gen antipsychotics
Advantages:
- Reduces (+) symptoms
- Reduce anxiety & agitation
- Cost-effective
Disadvantages:
- High risk for adverse events
- High risk for EPS
- High risk for side effects
