Chemotherapy of Amoebiasis
diloxanide fuoranate
paromomycin
metronidazole
Chemotherapy of Malaria
chloroquine, primaquine, sulfadoxine+pyrimethamine, quinine, tetracycline, artemether-lumefantrin
Chemotherapy of Giardiasis
Metronidazole
Amoebiasis etiologic agent
Entamoeba hystolitica
common symptom of amoebiasis
bloody stool
nonpathogenic Entamoeba and its difference
E. dispar / microscopic.
E. hystolitica ingests RBC
Why is amoebiasis both over and underreported?
Under - infected don’t seek medical attention
Over - misdiagnosed nonpathogenic cases
Types of Amebicides
Mixed
Luminal
eradicate intestinal and systemic amoeba
Mixed
eg. Metronidazole
eradicate intestinal amoeba ONLY
Luminal
eg. Diloxonide, paramycin
Spectrum of Metronidazole

ADME Metronidazole
90-100% BA, wide distribution, 30-60% metabolized in liver to hydroxymetronidazole (60-80% bioactive), t1/2 - 5012 hours, excretoin via urine and feces (20, 6-15%)
Metronidazole Indication

Antibiotic induced pseudomembranous colitis
Bacterial vaginosis
Prophylaxis of anaerobes in colorectal and gyne surgery
