Antimicrobials: Spectrum of Action Flashcards
Prototypical Penicillins
Narrow: Gram + / - Cocci, Gram + Rods, Spirochetes
Extended Spectrum Penicillins
Broader than PenG/V, includes more Gram + cocci and gram (-) rods
Penicillinase Resistant Penicillins
Narrow: MSSA
Anti-Pseuodomonal Penicillin
Extended spectrum: Amoxcillin + pseudomonas
Penicillin + ß lactamase inhibitor. Sulbactam is another inhibitor.
Same as amoxicillin, but Resists ß lactamases
Cephalosporins: Penicillinase resistant
Gram (+) Cocci , Gram (-) Rods.
Carbapenems. Beta lactamase resistant.
Wide Spectrum. Gram (+) cocci, Gram (-) rods, anaerobes. Reserved for multi drug resistant organisms
Monobactams
Narrow: Aerobic Gram (-) Rods Only
Vancomycin
Narrow: Gram (+) Cocci, Anaerobes
Macrolides. MacroLungs
Gram (+) Cocci, Atypical pneumonias, URI, STD
Lincomycin
Narrow: gram (+) Cocci, Anaerobes in lung abscesses and aspiration pneumonia
Synthetic Agents
Meningitis + intracellular
Streptogramins
Excellent gram (+) and atypical, reserve for use in MDR gram (+)
Oxazolidinones
Excellent gram (+) but save as reserve for MDR organisms
