Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Flashcards
What is MIC?
It is the minimum inhibitory concentration which is the minimum concentration of antibacterial needed to inhibit the visible growth of a given organism
What is MBC?
It is the minimum bactericidal concentration which is the minimum concentration of antibacterial needed to kill a given organism
What does sensitive mean?
An organism is considered to be sensitive when it is inhibited or killed by the levels of antibacterial available at the site of infection
What does resistant mean?
An organism is considered to be resistant when it is not killed or inhibited by the levels of antibacterial available at the site of infection
What is a synergist?
A combination of 2 static/cidal drugs in which the combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual contributions
What does an antagonist mean?
A combination of 1 static/cidal drug in which the combined effect is less than the sum of their individual contributions
What does bactericidal mean?
An antimicrobial that kills bacteria
What does bacteriostatic mean?
An antibacterial that inhibits the growth of bacteria
What are the antibacterial that inhibit cell wall synthesis?
Penicillins and Cephalosporins and Glycopeptides
How does penicillin and cephalosporin inhibit cell was synthesis?
They contain B-lactams that inhibits the production of enzymes that are responsible for the cross-linking carbohydrates in peptidoglycan chains
How does antibacterial inhibit cell wall synthesis?
They interact with the peptidoglycan structure in cell walls
What are the examples of glycoprotein that inhibit cell wall synthesis?
Vancomycin and Teicoplanin
How do glycopeptides inhibit cell wall synthesis?
They act on the stage prior to B-lactams and inhibit the production of peptidoglycan precursors. They only act on gram +ve bacteria
