Ondansetron (Zofran): MOA and dose?

A

MOA:
Selectively blocks serotonin 5-HT3 receptors peripherally (Abd vagal afferents) & centrally (CTZ)
Periop: IV 4mg (on emergence)

Dose:
Postop: IV/PO 4mg

Metoclopramide (Reglan)

A

MOA:
Dopamine 2 receptor antagonist, Blocks DA receptors at the CTZ; stimulates upper GI motility and ↑ gastric emptying

Dose:
Preop: 10-20 mg IV over 3-5min to decrease gastric fluid
Postop: 10mg at end of procedure for NV
