Antidepressants Flashcards
What Antidepressant categories deal with reuptake of neurotransmitters?
SSRIs
SNRIs
TCAs
What antidepressant category deals with the breakdown of Neurotransmitters?
MAOIs
What is the main limitation of the monoamine hypothesis?
Antidepressants act rapidly at the site of action…yet the clinical effects are not sen for about 3 weeks.
What could be the possible reason for the 3 week delay from treatment to relief?
Presynaptic autoreceptors. They have an inhibitory signal to neurotransmitter production/release because they think there is too much postsynaptic NT….After weeks the signal is reduced and the treatment takes effect.
