Antibiotics - Cell Membrane Disruptors Flashcards
1
Q
This is an itty-baby-sized deck.
A
I felt the need to add an extra card to justify it.
2
Q
What is the mode of action for polymyxins?
A
Dissolve phosphatidylethanolamine, a specialized PL in G- membranes (also in our membranes!!! yikes).
3
Q
What are uses for polymyxins?
A
Pretty damn toxic, so topical only for G- (often with bacitracin and neomycin)…or as a last resort for resistant bugs.
4
Q
What is an example of a polymyxin?
A
Colistin
5
Q
What is the mode of action for daptomycin (a common brand is cubicin)?
A
Cyclic lipopeptide - dissolves in membrane and disrupts membrane potential
6
Q
What are uses for daptomycin?
A
G+ cocci (including MRSA!!!) - must be given IV
Synergy with beta-lactams
