Antibiotics - Antimetabolites Flashcards
1
Q
What are some antimetabolites?
A
Sulfonamides (Sulfone) and Trimethoprim
2
Q
What is the mode of action?
A
Inhibit steps in the pathway below:
PABA –> DHF –> THF –> pyrimidines
Basically, disrupts the pathway to make folic acid that bacteria have, but we get it from food so we gucci.
3
Q
DO NOT GIVE THESE TO PREGNANT WOMEN.
A
Don’t do it. Teratogen.
4
Q
How can bacteria develop resistance to sulfonamides and trimethoprim?
A
Overproduction of PABA (altered enzymes)
5
Q
What are uses for these drugs?
A
Nocardia is not yet resistant!
Synergistic (Sxt 5:1) for UTI, Salmonella, Shigella
