Q

What happens when a course of antibiotics are not completed

A

Increases the chance of bacteria resistance
Most resistant survive
They are no longer competing for resources, therefore more likely to reproduce

Q

How do antibiotics work

A
  1. Prevents bacteria from making normal cell walls by preventing peptides being made in cross linkages
(When water enters bacteria it results in bursting)
  2. Stop forming proteins/ forming abnormal proteins
  3. Inhibits DNA replication
  4. Disrupts cell membrane

Q

What is horizontal gene transmission

A
  1. A conjugation tube forms
  2. Plasmid of donor cell starts to replicate
  3. Replicated plasmid starts to enter tube
  4. Linear strand enters recipient cell
  5. Linear strand forms a circle (plasmid)
