Anti-platelet Drugs Flashcards
list anti-platelet drugs (6)
aspirin ticlodipine cilostazol dipyridamole Abciximab thienopyridines
how does aspirin work?
it irreversibly acetylates COX1/COX2 which therfore decreases synthesis of thromboxane
name an ADP receptor inhibitor and its side effects
ticlodipine. Can cause neutropenia, fatal agranulocytosis with thrombocytopenia
name 2 PDE inhibitors
cilostazol and dipyridamole.
explain how PDE inhibitors work
inhibition of PDE = increase cAMP in platelets = increase PKA = impaired platelet aggregation and formation of the platelet plug. NOTE INCREASE CAMP CAUSES ARTERIOLAR VASODILATION WHICH TREATS CLAUDICATION IN PATIENTS WITH PAD
name 3 GP2b/3a inhibitors
abciximab, eptifibatide, tirofiban prevent platelet aggregation and plug formation. It can cause drug induced thrombocytopenia
explain how thienopyridines work
they irreversibly bind to P2Y12 ADP receptor, which prevents aggregation of platelets. Eg. clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel. They are used for CAD, acute ischemic stroke, MI, decrease peripheral artery disease risk
