how does anterior uveitis present?
A
- acutely painful red eye
- photophobia
- small pupil
- reduced visual acuity
- associated with pus in anterior chamber (hypopyon)

what is anterior uveitis?
A
inflammation of the anterior portion of the uvea (iris and ciliary body)

what is anterior uveitis associated with?
A
HLA-B27 and its linked conditions:
- ankylosing spondylitis
- reactive arthritis
- UC, Crohn’s
- Behcet’s disease
- sarcoidosis

how is anterior uveitis managed?
A
- urgent review by ophthal
- cycloplegics (dilates pupil which helps to relieve pain and photophobia) e.g. atropine, cyclopentolate
- steroid eye drops

A
steroid + cycloplegic eye drops

A 65-year-old female presents to the emergency department with a painful red eye. It came on suddenly this morning and is associated with photophobia and reduced vision. On examination, she has a small pupil and ciliary flush.
Dx?
A
This is a typical presentation of anterior uveitis with a painful red eye associated with reduced visual acuity, photophobia, a small pupil and ciliary flush.
