Anterior Pituitary Flashcards
What is the anterior pituitary also called?
Adenohypophysis.
What are the three regions of the anterior pituitary?
- Pars Distalis
- Pars tuberalis
- Pars intermedia
What system do hormones reach the anterior pituitary?
Hypophyseal portal system.
What are the two classes of hypothalamic regulatory hormones?
- Releasing hormones (RH): Stimulate synthesis and release of hormones at anterior lobe.
- Inhibiting hormones (IH): Prevent synthesis and secretion of hormones from Anterior lobe.
What is FSH and what does it do?
Follicle Stimulating Hormone.
Female: Acts on follicular cell maturation, production of estrogen.
Male: Regulate maturation of sperm.
What is LH and what does it do?
Luteinizing Hormone.
Female: act on follicular cells to regulate ovulation and production of progesterone.
Male: Act on interstitial cells of testes to regulate testosterone.
What is ACTH and what does it do? What can happen when its malfunctioning?
Adrenocorticotropic hormone.
Acts on adrenal cortex to stimulate production and secretion of Corticosteroids.
Cushing syndrome.
What is THS and what does it do?
Thyroid stimulating hormone.
Regulates release of thyroid hormones from thyroid.
What is PRL and what does it do?
Prolactin.
Females: Regulates mammary gland growth and milk production.
Males: Influence sensitivity of interstitial cells to LH
What is GH and what does it do?
Growth Hormone.
Stimulates growth and division, and liver production of Somatomedin.
What happens during dwarfism? Giantism? Acromegaly?
Dwarf=Hypo of GH
Giant=Hyper of GH
Acro= Hyper of GH during adulthood
