Q

The patellar reflex tests the function of what

The absence of a reflex is known as what

A

The femoral N. As well as L2 - L4

The absence is known as Westphal’s sign

6
Q

What does the calcaneal tendon reflex test

A

Tests S1 and S2 nerve roots

If the nerve root is cut or compressed, the ankle reflex is virtually absent

7
Q

What is osgood-schlatter disease

A

A pulling away of quadriceps tendon from the tibial tuberosity

This usually occurs in kids and young adults

Healed by addition of new bone to the area

10
Q

Define the adductor canal

A

A long, narrow passageway in the middle third of the thigh. This provides for an intermuscular passage for the femoral A./V., saphenous N., and the nerve of the vastus medialis

11
Q

What are the borders of the adductor canal

A

Anterior/lateral by the vastus medialis

Posteriorly by the adductus longus and magnus

Medially by the sartorius which overlies the groove between and above muscles forming the roof of the cana

Q

What type of fracture of the hip bones may occur during sports with a sudden acceleration or deceleration

16
Q

What is the most common type of fracture of the tibia

A

A compound fractures

17
Q

What is a hip pointer injury

A

A contusion of the iliac crest that usually occurs at its anterior part where the sartorius attaches to the ASIS

Usually involved with collision sports

18
Q

Where is the most common site of thigh hematoma

A

In the quadriceps

19
Q

What is a charlie horse

A

Cramping of an individual thigh muscle due to ischemia or a contusion

20
Q

What causes a psoas abcess

A

A retroperitoneal pyogenic infection in the abdomen or pelvis secondary to TB of the vertebral column

Can also be caused by regional enteritis of the ileum

21
Q

Psoas abcess should always be considered when?

A

When there is edema in the proximal part of the thigh

22
Q

Where can a psoas abscess be palpated

A

The inguinal region, just inferior or superior to the inguinal ligament

23
Q

What are the S/S of a paralyzed quadriceps muscle

A

Patient can not extend the leg against resistance

Commonly walk with a forward lean, pressing on the distal end of the thigh with their hand as the heel contacts the ground to prevent flexion

24
Q

Define chondromalacia patallae and give S/S

A

Known as runner’s knee

Is a softening of the articular cartilage of the patella

Due to an overstrethching of the knee region and a quadriceps imbalance

25
Q

When does the patella ossify

A

3 - 6 yrs

26
Q

Define bipartite or tripartite patella and what it can be mistaken for

A

Separate (2 or 3) parts of the patella due to an ossification abnormality

Can be mistaken for a patellar Fx.

Is always seen bi-laterally

27
Q

What muscle of the leg can be removed and transplanted elsewhere to help with muscle injury

A

The gracilis

28
Q

Define a groin pull and its S/S

A

A strain, stretching, and probably some tearing of the proximal attachments of the antetomedial thigh muscles have occurred.

Usually involves the flexor and adductor thigh muscles

29
Q

Define rider’s strain

A

A muscle strain of the adductor longus M.

30
Q

The anterior compt. Of the thigh contains what

A

The extensors and the fem. N.

31
Q

The medial compt. Of the thigh contains what

A

The adductors and the obturator N.

32
Q

The posterior compt. Of the thigh contains what

A

The flexors and the sciatic N.

33
Q

What is the Des Anserius

A

A common site of insertion for 3 muscles

34
Q

What 3 muscles insert to the Des Anserius and what N. Innervates them

A

Sartorius - Fem N.
Gracialis - Obturator N.
Semitendinosus - Tibial Div. of Sciatic N.
