Anterior Abdominal Wall and Inguinal Regions Flashcards
What is a dermatome?
Area of skin where sensory nerves derive from single spinal root
What is a conjoint tendon and where is it located?
Aponeurotic falx formed from the lower part of aponeurosis of internal oblique muscles
What is prune belly syndrome?
Lack of abdominal muscles causing skin on the abdominal area to wrinkle - causes undescended testicles and urinary tract malformations
What do nerves from T7-T9 innervate in the abdominal area?
Skin from xiphoid process to above umbilicus
What do nerves from T10 innervate in the abdominal area?
Skin around the umbilicus
What do nerves from T11-T12-L1 innervate in the abdominal area?
Skin below umbilicus and pubic crest region
Where is the tunica vaginalis derived?
Derived from the peritoneum, continues through inguinal canal to line of interior of scrotum and envelopes the testes
What is the approximate length of the inguinal canal?
4-6cm
What nerves enter the inguinal ring at the deep ring?
Genital branch of the femoral nerve - genitofemoral nerve
Describe the ilio-inguinal nerve
Enters inguinal Canal from the side by piercing the transverses abdominus and internal oblique
Describe direct and indirect inguinal hernias
Direct - Peritoneal sac enters medial end of inguinal canal directly through weakened posterior wall
Indirect - Most common - some or all of embryonic process vaginalis remains open - congenital
Describe reducible and irreducible hernias
Reducible - Can be pushed back into the abdomen when lying down
Irreducible - Cannot be pushed back into the abdomen
How do you distinguish between a direct and indirect hernia?
Males - if scrotum is descended = indirect
If hernia is on one side of groin likely to be a direct hernia
