Antacid Medications Flashcards
Aluminum hydroxide gel
Calcium carbonate
Aluminum hydroxide
Magnesium trisilicate
Adverse Effects: Constipation that may lead to impaction, phosphate depletion.
Aluminum hydroxide gel Calcium carbonate Aluminum hydroxide Magnesium trisilicate Nursing Considerations:
Monitor bowel pattern. Compounds contain sodium; check if client is on sodium restricted diet. Aluminum and magnesium antacid compounds interfere with tetracycline absorption. Encourage fluids. Monitor for signs of phosphate deficiency-malaise, weakness, tremors, bone pain. Shake well. Careful use advised for kidney dysfunction.
Magnesium Hydroxide
Adverse Effects:
Excessive dose can produce nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
Magnesium Hydroxide
Nursing Considerations:
Store at room temp w/tight lid to prevent absorption of CO2. Prolonged and frequent use of cathartic dose can lead to dependence.
Administer with caution to clients w renal disease.

Antacid Medications
Action
Neutralizes gastric acids; raises gastric pH;
Inactivates pepsin
Antacid Medications
Indications:
Peptic Ulcer, Indigestion, Reflux esophagitis, Prevent stress ulcers
Antacid Medications
Adverse Effects
Constipation, diarrhea, Acid rebound between doses,
Acid/Base Imbalances
Antacid Medications
Nursing Considerations:
use meds with sodium content cautiously for clients with cardiac and renal disease.
Absorption of tetracyclines, quinolones, iron preps, phenothiazides, isoniazid reduced when given w/ antacids. Effectiveness of oral contraceptives and salicylates may decrease when given w antacids.
