ANSC 221 EXAM 1 Flashcards
What was the historical importance of Dr. Stephan Babcock’s experiment
- First semi purified diet used with farm animals of economic importance, so people took notes, and this became a very important tool in nutrition
- it led to a research opening in the Golden Age of Nutrition with the discovery of the vitamins and minerals
What did Dr. Forsyth say to know about feed additives
Feed additives are regulated and it is important to stay up to date and follow those regulations
Why feed low calcium to prevent milk fever
The parathyroid gland secretes slow-acting hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response to the low calcium level that is detected in the blood. Feed low Ca ahead of time can activate the PTH that will increase Ca absorption and release Ca from bone
If fed high Ca ahead of time it send the wrong signal that more Ca is not needed
Why isn’t it effective to feed BST to improve milk production
BST is a protein and if eaten it would be digested into amino acids. It must be injected in order to work
What are the main concerns when feeding antibiotics
Antibiotic residues remaining in animal tissues, and microbial resistance to antibiotic
