ANS Flashcards
What part of the spinal chord does parasympathetic outflow come from?
Cranial & sacral outflows
What part of the spinal chord does sympathetic outflow come from?
T1-L3
thoraco-lumbar outflows
What is the nervous system of the GI tract called?
ENS
What controls autonomic neurones in the CNS?
Pathways descending from higher regions, in particular the hypothalamus
What NT do all pre- ganglionic neurones release & what rec does it act on?
Ach
Nicotinic cholinergic
In sympathetic post-ganglionic nerves, what else is released as well as NA?
A peptide called neuropeptide Y
NPY
Where is NPY particularly prominent?
Blood vessels
What is a function on NPY?
Release from the same terminal as NA, prolonging the vasoconstriction as the effect of NA is usually quite short.
What other peptide is released with ACh?
VIP
What is the action of VIP?
Increasing BF through glandular tissue. Helpful in replacing secretion of gland by ⬆️ blood supply
What 4 cranial nerves carry parasympathetic nerve fibres?
3, 7, 9, 10
Via what CN is info transmitted from baroreceptors to the brainstem?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
