ANNPE Flashcards
What is ANNPE?
Acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion
Which dogs are usually affected by ANNPE?
Non-chondrodystrophic dogs
What does ANNPE result from?
Changes in the spinal cord secondary to an acute impact of extruded disc material following a traumatic incident
Whats the properties of the disc material extruded?
THe disc material is generally non-degenerate and there is no residual spinal cord compression
Can ANNPE induce local hemorrhage?
Yes - epidural hemorrhage can sometimes be associated but tends only to cause mild, non-significant spinal cord compression
What are the clinical signs of ANNPE?
Per-acute, generally non-compressive
Not painful
Usually lateralized
Image modality of choice?
MRI
CT+ myelography can also be used to exclude any extradural spinal cord compression
Negative prognostic factor?
LMN lesions
Negative prognostic factor?
LMN lesions
No nociception
How many % of dogs regained ambulation following a thoracolumbar ANNPE where nociception were intact at presentation?
99%
