Master Gunner

- Move to the range or training site before the
firing unit. - Ensure that concurrent training is set up properly.
- Brief the OIC of firing and the RSO on the
SDZ that was used for each type of ammunition
and each firing position. - Brief the unit on the conduct of fire and the
tasks, conditions, and standards for each firing
evolution.
Master Gunner

- Preparing a surface danger area diagram and
range overlay, if required. - Preparing scaled ranges if required.
- Organizing and setting up range firing exercises.
- Ensuring that range firing exercises are properly
conducted. - Coordinating the target array and the layout for

needed, by coordinating with the LCEs and
platoon sergeants to identify crew deficiencies. - Ensuring that an effective LCE program is
implemented for standardization.

During the Range
- Maintain all required communication, and for live fire range exercises, ensures that BACK-UP communication are available.
- Monitor the SDZ to ensure that it remains
clear. - Ensure that the firing is halted promptly when
an unsafe act is observed or reported. - Ensure that misfires are handled in accordance
with procedures established for the weapon - Ensure that weapons are cleared and checked
during temporary suspensions of firing. - Ensure that personnel do not move to or from
the small arms or crew-served range firing
lines without permission from the OIC or the
RSO. - Ensure that materiel is not removed from the
firing line without permission from the OIC or
the RSO. - Maintain records with the type of ammunition
fired, the number of rounds fired, and the number

Dispersion Area
The area within the SDZ located between the GTL and the ricochet area. This area accounts for human error, gun or cannon tube wear, propellant temperature, and so forth.
Target NCO
- Ensure that the targets are in the proper location
on the range. - Ensure that the target detail is proficient in the
operation and troubleshooting procedures for
all target mechanisms used. - Ensure that the target detail has the required
equipment and supplies and that prepositioned
targets are available when needed. - Ensure that there are enough spare targets, target
mechanisms, batteries, patches, and other
related equipment on the range or training site
to support training. - Report any mechanical malfunctions that
