Annelida Flashcards
What is metamerism?
Metamerism isthe repetition of homologous body segments. This type of development can be seen in the Annelids, which include earthworms, leeches, tubeworms, and their relatives. It is also seen in a more advanced form in the Arthropods, such as crustaceans, insects, and their relatives.
Give 4 characteristics of Annelids
- They are triploblastic organisms (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm)
- The body is metamerically segmented
- The sexes are separate (Hemaphrodites)
- The body is bilaterally symmetrical (left and right side of an organism equal)
The excretory system of Annelids consists of
A pair of Nephridia is located in each segment.
Give the classes of Annelids..
Class Polychaeta
Class Oligachaeta
Class Hirudilea
The epidermis of Annelida is covered with
Thin Corticle.
Annelids have a pre-oral segment known as
Prostonium in which the brain is located.
Define Clitenium
Part of the body that is not segmented.
What is parapodia?
any of the paired unjointed lateral appendages of polychaete worms, used in locomotion, respiration, etc.
What are the characteristics of Class Polychaeta
- They have distinct head but no clitenium(all body parts are segmented)
- The lateral extension of their body is called Parapodia
- They have sexes separate.
Order Arenicola and Order Nereisis belong to what class
Class Polychaeta
What are the characteristics of class Oligachaeta
- They inhabit fresh water on earth
- Parapodia is absent
- Gonads are restricted in few segments of the body
- Clitenium is present in matured worms
- Members are hemephrodites
- Sex organs are poorly developed
What are the characteristics of Class Hirudinea(leeches)
- Absence of chaeta
- Members are hermaphrodite
- The segments are few
- There is no parapodia
- There is at least one sicker
- They are purely aquatic and are found in most freshwater bodies.
