Ankle Flashcards
Ankle Inversion Injury
Sprain where one or more of the ligaments are partially or completely torn.
inversion sprains make up for 85% of all sprains.
Previous history of sprain means the ligaments are weaker and therefore more prone to spraining again.
Ankle rolls outwards while the foot rolls inwards.
Cannot weight-bare, swelling, weakness, bruising, tenderness.
Ankle Eversion Injury
tearing of ligaments on medial side of the ankle.
Deltoid ligament is strongest so the tearing of this is uncommon.
Often occurs alongside a fibular fracture because it means that there is nothing stopping the ankle form performing excess eversion.
Pain on medial aspect of ankle, Swelling, redness, bruising, weakness, tenderness.
Ankle Fracture
Occurs through excessive Inversion/Eversion.
Occurs when one or more bones at the ankle are broken/avulsed.
Swelling, Immediate severe pain, bruising, tenderness, numbness, Inability to put weight on the foot.
6 weeks of immobilisation.
Gastrocnemius Strain
Common in sports involving high speed running.
Usually occurs in the medial head of the gastrocnemius.
Sudden pain in calf, Audible “pop”, Swelling, tenderness, bruising, pain during plantarflexion, stretching reproduces pain.
