Animal Tissues (EPITHELIAL) Flashcards
Is a group of similar cells that performs a common function.
Tissue
Four types of Animal tissues
Epithelial, Nervous, Muscular, Connective
The study of animal and plant tissues.
Histology
Involves the preparation of thin tissue sections, differentially stained and examined under the microscope
Histology
May be simple (single layer of cells) or stratified (more than one layer of cells)
Epithelial Tissue
3 types of Epithelium based on their shape
Squamous, Cuboidal, Columnar
A tissue is considered ____ if it has single layer of cells.
Simple
A tissue is considered ____ if it has more than one layer of cells
Stratified
Single layer of flattened cells
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Usually found in thin barriers where exchange of nutrients, wastes, and respiratory gases occur
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Found in the alveoli of the lungs and in capillaries. All blood vessels and the heart are lined with this type of squamous cells.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Have larger cytoplasm. For absorption and secretion.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Is a single layer of cube-shaped cells.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
The secretory cells of different glands are made up of this
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Also found in the tubules of kidney and the ducts of most glands.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Single layer of elongated cells. Ideal for absorption and secretion
Simple Columnar Epithelium
It lining the small intestines. (Responsible for about 90% absorption)
Simple Columnar Epithelium
The Simple Columnar Epithelium is responsible to up to how many percent of absorption?
90%
It has a specialized structure called microvilli
Simple Columnar Epithelium
The specialized structure in simple columnar epithelium is called what?
Microvilli
Specialized columnar cells
Goblet cells, Ciliated simple columnar, Pseudostratified Columnar
Found in the lining of the stomach and small intestine. Responsible for mucus secretion
Goblet Cells
Found in the small bronchioles of respiratory tract for mucus movement. Found also in the fallopian tubes.
Ciliated simple columnar
Is the “falsely stratified” epithelium. Made up of columnar cells that are tall and thin and form irregular shapes. Found in the upper respiratory tract as ciliated types.
Pseudostratified Columnar
