Animal And Plant Adaptations Flashcards
WHY DO ANIMALS ADAPT
An adaptation is a way an animals body helps it to survive or live in certain environments.
Animals learn to adapt/ change
Each adaptation is produced by evolution — changes develop over generations
WHY DO ANIMALS DEPEND ON ADAPTATION
Animals depend on their physical features to help them obtain food, keep safe, build homes, and with stand weather and attract males
EXAMPLES OF BASIC ADAPTIONS
5
- shape of birds beaks
- number of fingers
- colour of fur
- thickness of fur
- shape if nose and ears
WHAT ARE THE HOT CLIMATE ADAPTIONS — a camel
- large flat feet to spread their weight on the sand
- thick fur on top of body for shade, thin fur elsewhere to allow heat loss
- store water in their humps (Long time without water)
WHAT ARE THE COLD CLIMATE ADAPTATIONS — polar bear
- a white appearance for camouflage
- thick layers of fat and fur for heat insulation
- greasy coat that sheds water after swimming
- large feet to help walk on snow and ice
WHY DO PLANTS ADAPT
some plants are adapted for pollination by the wind, and some pollination by insects.
Plants adapted for insect pollination have colourful petals to attract insects
Plants that have adapted for wind pollination have small light pollen so that it can be carried by the wind. They have feathery stigmas to catch the pollen
PLANTS HOT CLIMATE ADAPTIONS — desert plants cactus
- stems that can store water and roots systems that can collect water
- have spines instead of leaves, this minimises surface area and so reduced water loss by transpiration
PLANTS COLD CLIMATE ADAPTIONS — Arctic plants
- plants often grow close to the ground
- they have small leaves
all this helps to conserve water and to avoid the damage due to wind
