Angiology Flashcards
1
Q
Arteries
(2)
A
- Can be divided into 2 types
- Elastic arteries
- Muscular arteries
2
Q
Elastic arteries
A
- largest arteries including those closest to the heart (i.e. aorta are elastic in type)
- The plentiful elastic tissue in their walls allows for a considerable degree of distension on contraction of the heart followed by elastic recoil helping to propel the blood through the circulatory system
- The large quantity of elastic tissue within the walls of these vessels accounts for the yellowish color
3
Q
Muscular Arteries
A
- presence of much smooth muscle in these small diameter arteries
- arterioles enables these to constrict in diameter increasing peripheral to flow
- Therefore, contributes to the regulation of blood pressure
4
Q
Veins
A
- of largest diameter
- convey blood at low pressures and therefore have relatively thin walls
- Unlike arteries, many veins contain valves to assist in the directional flow of blood
- In many parts of the body, an artery and a vein accompany eachother closely and are described as being satellite to eachother (veins can be distinguished by larger diameter)
- The relatively thin walls results in the contained blood , wheter fresh or embalmed, being partially visible through the wall–> gives darker appearance
- The thicker wall of the smaller diameter satellite artery results in a paler, pinker appearance
5
Q
Lymphatic Vessels
A
- Only the largest lymphatic vessels can be identified at naked eye level
- Of these, the largest is the thoracic duct in the thoracic cavity –> has general appearance of a thin walled vein
- the presence of very numerous valves results in a highly beaded appearance
