Anesthetics Flashcards
Can cause malignant hyperthermia and sensitizes catecholamines
Halothane
What is the most potent anesthetic?
halothane
They cause increased intracranial pressure
Halogenated anesthetics (halothane, isoflurane, methoxyflurane, sevoflurane
They cause a decrease in arterial blood pressure
Halogenated hydrocarbons
An anesthetic that is metabolized in the liver and can cause significant hepatic toxicity
Halothanel
A halogen anesthetic that is less hepatotoxic than halothane but can cause arrhythmia and smells like poo
Isoflurane
The newest inhalation agent that has a rapid onset and rapid recovery with high potency.
Sevoflurane
Has a low blood solubility, but has a really high MAC, no muscle relaxing effect, and can cause diffusion hypoxia
Nitrous oxide
Facilitate GABA induced Cl entry into neurons, leading to CNS depression. Rapid onset with short action allowing for quick recovery.
Barbituates:
Thiopental (Pentothal)
Methohexital (Brevital)
Cause amnesia but are insufficent for anesthesia
Benzodiazapines (Midazolam (versed))
Injection anesthetic that has a rapid induction and recovery from anesthesia. It may be given alone or used for induction. May result in injection pain
Propofol (diprivan)
Is a dissociative anesthetic that results in awareness but no muscle movement. Can cause delirium and hallucinations and is abused.
Ketamine (ketalar)
