Anesthesia Flashcards
What class of medications can increase the risk of aspiration?
GLP-1 agonist
What should be done to decrease the aspiration risk with GLP-1s?
Hold GLP-1 24h if QD dosing OR
a week prior if weekly dosing
What is general anesthesia?
global depression of CNS
What are the steps for general anesthesia?
- induction
- ventilation
- intubation
- maintenance of analgesia
- awakening
- extubation
- recovery in PACU
What muscle relaxants are depolarizing?
succinylcholine
What muscle relaxants are nondepolarizing?
Rocuronium
Vecuronium
What is the difference between depolarizing and nondepolarizing muscle relaxants?
Depolarizing: mimics actions of Ach–> depolarizes NMJ (Ach has no effect now)
Nondepolarizing: competitive antagonist of Ach (reversible)
What can be used to reverse nondepolarizing muscle relaxants?
cholinesterase inhibitors
What was the first selective relaxant binding agent used to reverse nondepolarizing muscle relaxants?
Sugammadex
Why is Sugammdex superior to Neostigmine at reversing the blockade of non-depolarizing agents?
no cholinergic effects
What is malignant hyperthermia?
inherited myopathy –> defect in SR –> hypermetabolic state
What agents can cause malignant hyperthermia?
depolarizing muscle relaxants (succinylcholine)
What is the treatment for malignant hyperthermia?
Dantrolene
How should allergic reactions be manages?
- D/C drug
- administer 100% oxygen
- Epi
- IV fluids
- diphenhydramine
- steroids
Where are the primary locations of regional anesthesia?
- spinal
- epidural
