Anesthesia Flashcards
Sugammadex
first medication approved for reversal of neuromuscular blockade from Rocuronium or Vecuronium
At what level of sedation can you use neostigmine to reverse neuromuscular blocking agent?
need to have at least 2 out of a train of 4
is the miller blade curved or straight
straight
is the mactintosh blade curved or straight
curved
how does the miller blade work
lifts the epiglottis directly to provide the glottis view
how does the macintosh blade work
retracts the hypo-epiglottic ligament to indirectly lift the epiglottis
What is an oropharyngeal airway
an airway adjunct used to maintain or open the airway by stopping the tongue from covering the epiglottis
what can a severe drop in end-tidal CO2 mean?
- tracheal extubation
- disconnection of the breathing circuit
- cessation of cardiac output (embolus possibly)
what kind of blade would you use to intubate in the pediatric population?
Miller blade
- larynx is higher and more an anterior in kids
how do you establish an airway in a child < 12 years old if oral intubation fails?
needle cricothyrotomy to avoid damage to the vocal cords

- liquids
- carbs
- protein
how long do you have to wait before initiating anesthesia for a light meal
6 hours
what is considered a heavy meal for anesthesia
anything containing fat
how long do you wait for a heavy meal before anesthesia
8 hours
What can arise during anesthesia if benzocaine spray is used during intubation
- methemoglobinemia, where you get decrease in O2 saturation
- treatment is methylene blue administration
