this medication is the biosynthetic form of the natural hormone erythopoietin
epoetin alfa (Epogen)
uses for epoetin alfa (Epogen)
anemia associated with end-stage renal disease, chemotherapy induced anemia, anemia associated with zidovudine therapy (maily HIV)
IV or Oral iron is given with this medication
epoetin alfa (Epogen)
this medication is ineffective without adequate stored iron in the body and bone marrow functions
contradictions to using epoetin alfa (Epogen)
uncontrolled hypertension, hemoglobing levels above 10g/dL for cancer patients or 11g/dL for renal cancer, head/neck cancer, or risk for thrombosis
normal blood levels for hemoglobin
males is 14 to 18g/dL and female is 12 to 16g/dL

normal blood level for hematocrit
males 42 to 52% and female is 37 to 47%
