Anemia classification Flashcards
What is the common underlying defect of all microcytic anemias?
Ineffective hemoglobin production
What are the 5 microcytic anemias?
Fe def, ACD (late), thalassemias, lead poisoning, and sideroblastic
What are the 2 main categories of normocytic anemias?
hemolytic and non-hemolytic
What are the 2 categories of hemolytic anemias?
intrinsic or extrinsic
What does “intrinsic” vs. “extrinsic” refer to w/ regard to hemolysis?
intrinsic RBC defect (e.g. spherocytosis, G6PD, sickle cell) or extrinsic force (e.g. autoimmune, angiopathy, infection)
What are the 2 categories of macrocytic anemia?
megaloblastic or non-megaloblastic
What are the 5 types of non-megaloblastic, macrocytic anemias?
liver disease, alcoholism, reticulocytosis, metabolic disorders, drugs
