16
Q

What are most erythroid hypoplasias? Intrinsic or extrinsic?

A

Extrinsic

17
Q

What are 5 reasons that renal disease causes anemia?

A
Not enough EPO
Uremic toxins
Excess PTH
Hypocalcemia
Bleeding tendencies
18
Q

Why does hypocalcemia cause anemia?

A

Vit. D is activated in the kidney, so PTH is increased to pull Ca2+ out of bone.

19
Q

Why does inflammatory disease cause anemia?

A

Low serum iron, but increased iron storage so it’s not available for the RBC precursors

20
Q

What is the mechanism behind anemia of inflammatory disease?

A

LPS (G- cell wall) and IL-6 induce hepatic production of Hepcidin which regulates iron homeostasis by inhibiting cellular efflux of iron by induing internalization and degredation of ferroportin.

21
Q

What is ferroportin?

A

Exclusive transporter of iron out of cells.

22
Q

What is the most common cause of endocrine related anemia?

A

Hypothyroidism

23
Q

How does hypothyroidism cause anemia?

A

Decreased metabolism

24
Q

What is another cause of endocrine related anemia?

A

Hypoadrenocorticism

25
Q

What is anemia due to hyperadrenocorticism often masked by?

A

Mild anemia is masked by dehydration
