Anemia Flashcards
Microcytic anemias (Low MCV/Hgb)
Iron deficiency anemia
Anemia of chronic disease
Thalassemia
Sideroblastic anemia
Lead poisoning
Iron deficiency anemia
Most common
Insufficient Iron intake or chronic blood loss
S/s: brittle nails, SOB, fatigue
Anemia of chronic disease
1)Associated with chronic infections, inflammation, autoimmune disease
2)Iron sequestered in macrophages
S/s:same
Peripheral blood smear for microcytic anemia
Microcytic, hypochromic(pale,lack of hgb) RBCs
Microcytic Anemia CBC
⬇️Hgb <12. ⬇️Hct <36%
⬇️RBC <3.5 ⬇️MCH <25.4
⬇️MVC < 80 ⬇️MCHC <31%
Megaloblastic anemia
1)Characterized by presence of abnormally lrg, immature RBCs in bone marrow
2)Caused by folate or b12 deficiency
Peripheral blood smear in megaloblastic anemia
1) hypersegmented neutrophils
2) macrocytes
3) variation in RBC size and shape
CBC in megaloblastic anemia
Low Hgb and Hct (<12 & <36%)
High MCV and MCH (>100 & >34)
RDW: >16
