Anemia Flashcards

1
Q

What is sickle cell anemia?

A

anemia caused by sickle shaped RBCs. RBCs cannot store enough hgb due to shape, they lyse more quickly than normal RBCs. cell lysis is what causes anemia.

Q

what are gerontologic considerations for anemia?

A

anemia is NOT normal for older adults
often r/t an underlying cause
other health conditions can overshadow or mask the s/s of anemia
anemia is more common in adults over age 70

Q

what is a reticulocyte?

A

an immature RBC. a cell is a reticulocyte for about 1 day before it becomes a mature RBC. reticulocytes usually make up 1% of the total RBCs.

16
Q

what typically causes iron deficiency anemia? what can be some other causes?

A

malnutrition
can also be caused by hemorrhage (heavy menstruation, ulcer, GI bleed). Can also be caused by malabsorption(celiac disease or IBS).

17
Q

what lab (CBC) abnormal values will be seen in iron deficiency anemia?

A

low ferritin levels and low reticulocyte levels

18
Q

polycythemia vera is…

A

an abnormally high level of RBCs. characterized by hct >55%. can be caused by chronic hypoxia or bone marrow overproduction of RBC. pt’s usually experience burning in hands.
treated with therapeutic phlebotomy, hydration, and low-dose ASA

19
Q

why is intrinsic factor (IF) important?

A

IF is a protein in the stomach and is necessary to absorb B-12.

20
Q

what are the four type of anemia?

A

iron deficiency anemia
sickle cell anemia
pernicious anemia (vitamin B-12 deficiency)
folic acid deficiency anemia
